YouTube Shorts Transcript: How to Get One in 2026

YouTube generates captions for nearly every Short. It then puts them somewhere you cannot reach. The vertical Shorts player has no "Show transcript" option, so the text is sitting in YouTube's systems and the interface gives you no way to open it.

This guide covers the four methods that actually work, what each one costs, and where they fail. One thing up front: TranscribeTok is a TikTok tool and does not transcribe YouTube Shorts. Everything recommended below is somebody else's product or YouTube's own.

Why the transcript is missing

The Shorts player is a different interface from the YouTube watch page. It is vertical, fullscreen and swipe-based — built to match the TikTok and Reels experience — and it carries a stripped-down menu. The transcript panel was built for the watch-page layout and was never ported across.

That is the whole explanation. It is a UI omission, not a missing caption track. Auto-captions are generated for Shorts at roughly the same rate as regular videos, and in practice a little higher, because Shorts are short and speech-dense. The captions exist. The button does not.

This is a milder version of TikTok's position, where captions display during playback and there is no copy, export or download anywhere in the product. Method 1: swap the URL (free, no tools)

The fastest route, and it costs nothing.

1. Copy the Short's link — it looks like youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
2. Replace /shorts/ with /watch?v= so you have youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
3. Open that in a desktop browser
4. Expand the description panel and click Show transcript

This works because a Short is a regular YouTube video with vertical framing. The /shorts/ path triggers the Shorts player; the /watch path loads the standard one, transcript panel included.

Where it fails. Some Shorts redirect back to the vertical player regardless of the URL you typed. The trick does not work in the YouTube mobile app at all — the app always routes Shorts to the Shorts player. And a Short with captions disabled by its creator has no transcript to show in either player.

Method 2: a transcript tool that accepts Shorts URLs

If the URL trick bounces, or you want the text as a file rather than a scrolling panel, paste the link into a tool built for it.

Method 3: yt-dlp (free, technical, reliable)

For anyone comfortable at a command line, yt-dlp pulls the caption file directly and never touches the player UI:

yt-dlp --write-auto-sub --sub-lang en --skip-download "https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID"

That downloads the auto-generated subtitle track as a .vtt file without downloading the video. Swap --sub-lang for another language code if the Short is not in English.

Method 4: transcribe the audio yourself

If the Short genuinely has no caption track — music-led, no speech, or captions turned off — none of the above returns anything, because all three read a caption track that is not there.

The fallback is speech recognition on the audio: download the video and run it through Whisper locally, or through any general transcription service. Slower to set up, works regardless of caption status.

Method comparison

The verdict. Try the URL swap first — it is ten seconds and free. If it bounces, use a transcript tool. If you are doing this more than a few times, install yt-dlp and stop thinking about it.

What a Shorts transcript will not contain

Three limits apply to every method above, and they are worth knowing before you rely on the output.

On-screen text is not captured. Title cards, text stickers and burned-in captions are rendered graphics, not data. A Short that opens with "3 PRODUCTIVITY TIPS" on screen and says nothing aloud produces an empty transcript. This is identical on TikTok, and it is the single most common surprise people hit — we cover the same limit in TikTok script extractor.

Transcripts are short. A 30-second Short is typically 50–75 spoken words; a 60-second one runs 100–150. That is often less text than the video's own description. For research or repurposing, expect to collect many before you have anything substantial.

Accuracy drops on Shorts specifically. Short-form audio is the hard case for speech recognition: fast delivery, background music beds, sound effects and rapid speaker changes all degrade it. Clear speech still lands in the mid-to-high 90s, but Shorts are frequently not clear speech. Check names, brands and handles before quoting.

Shorts, Reels and TikTok are the same problem three times

Every vertical short-video platform holds the caption text and declines to hand it over. YouTube hides the panel; Instagram renders captions as an overlay with no export; TikTok does the same. The tooling that exists for each one exists for that reason.
