Microsoft Copilot can summarize a YouTube video in Edge. It cannot do the same for a TikTok. Paste a TikTok link and Copilot has no way to hear what was said, so it either declines or works from the caption and hashtags, which are not the video.
The fix is one extra step: give Copilot the transcript. This guide covers why the link fails, the free workflow, what Copilot will and will not accept as an upload, and prompts suited to how people actually use Copilot — inside Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365.
Why Copilot can't open a TikTok
Copilot reads text, and a TikTok's words are only in the audio. When Copilot summarizes a YouTube video in Edge, it works from the transcript YouTube publishes alongside the video. TikTok has no equivalent. The page holds a caption, a username and hashtags; the spoken content is audio only.
Copilot also cannot take the video file. Microsoft's own file-upload page for Copilot lists the supported types: PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX documents; PNG, JPEG and related image formats; and TXT, JSON, CSV and MD text files. No video or audio format is on the list.
So the only way a TikTok's content reaches Copilot is as text.
The free workflow
Step 1: Copy the TikTok link. Share, then Copy link. The video must be public; private and friends-only videos cannot be transcribed by any tool.
Step 2: Get the transcript. Paste the link into TranscribeTok and click Get Transcript. It transcribes the audio track directly, so it works whether or not the creator switched on TikTok's captions. Two free every day, no account.
Step 3: Give it to Copilot. Paste the text into the chat. For several videos, save each transcript as a .txt file and upload them — Copilot takes up to 20 files per conversation, each up to 50 MB.
Step 4: Ask for something specific. Say what the video is and what you want back, and in what format.
What Copilot accepts, at a glance
| Input | Works in Copilot? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok link | No | No access to the audio |
| TikTok video file (MP4) | No | Video is not a supported upload type |
| Pasted transcript | Yes | Fastest route for one video |
| Transcript as a .txt file | Yes | Up to 50 MB per file, 20 files per conversation |
| Transcript as a PDF or DOCX | Yes | Also supported upload types |
Prompts for how people use Copilot
Copilot users tend to be moving something into work: an email, a document, a meeting. These prompts are written for that.
Turn a how-to TikTok into steps
Here is the transcript of a TikTok tutorial. Turn it into a numbered list of steps I can follow. Keep every setting, number and product name exactly as spoken. Flag any step the speaker skips over.
Brief a colleague
Summarize this TikTok transcript as a three-sentence brief for my manager: what the video claims, why it matters to a [your industry] team, and one question we should look into.
Draft an email from it
Using only what the speaker says in this TikTok transcript, draft a short email to my team sharing the three most useful tips. Friendly, plain language, under 150 words.
Translate and summarize in one go
This TikTok transcript is in [language]. Translate it into English, then give me a five-bullet summary underneath the translation.
For non-English videos, the TikTok transcript by language hub covers what changes per language — the German and Russian guides are good examples of where speech recognition behaves differently.
Getting better answers
Fix misheard names before pasting. If a brand or person came through wrong, correct it first so Copilot reasons about the right word.
Don't ask about visuals. A transcript is audio only. Copilot cannot know what was on screen, and it may invent an answer if asked.
Ask for a format. Copilot defaults to paragraphs. Ask for bullets, a table or a word count when you need one.
Keep one video per conversation for accuracy, or label clearly. If you paste several transcripts, name each ("Video 1: …") so Copilot can refer back without mixing them up.
Copilot or another assistant?
The transcript-first method is the same in every assistant. What differs:
- Copilot is convenient if you already work in Windows, Edge or Microsoft 365, and accepts TXT, PDF and DOCX uploads.
- Gemini can also take an uploaded video file on its free plan, within a 5-minute total — see TikTok transcript with Gemini.
- Claude is strongest for careful analysis of what was said — see TikTok transcript with Claude.
- ChatGPT has our longest prompt library — see TikTok transcript with ChatGPT.
- Grok adds live reaction from X — see TikTok transcript with Grok.

Frequently asked questions
Can Microsoft Copilot watch a TikTok video? No. Copilot cannot play a TikTok or hear its audio from a link. Microsoft's file-upload documentation for Copilot lists documents, images and text files, with no video or audio formats. To use a TikTok with Copilot, get the transcript first and paste or upload it as text.
Copilot summarizes YouTube videos in Edge. Why not TikTok? Copilot's video summaries in Edge rely on the transcript YouTube already publishes with the video. TikTok offers no transcript to read: the spoken words exist only in the audio, and the page itself carries just the caption and hashtags. Without a transcript, Copilot has nothing reliable to summarize.
What file types can I upload to Copilot? Microsoft lists PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX documents, PNG and JPEG images, and TXT, JSON, CSV and MD text files. Uploads are limited to 50 MB per file and 20 files per conversation. A TikTok transcript saved as a .txt file is well within those limits.
Is it free to summarize a TikTok with Copilot? Yes. Microsoft Copilot has a free tier that accepts pasted text and file uploads, and TranscribeTok gives two free TikTok transcripts every day with no account. Occasional use costs nothing.
Can Copilot translate a TikTok transcript? Yes. Paste the transcript and tell Copilot which language you want the result in. Translation of text is far more reliable than trying to translate from audio, so getting the transcript first gives better results for non-English TikToks.
Give Copilot the words
Copilot is built for text, and TikTok keeps its words in the audio. One step bridges the gap.
