NotebookLM can read a YouTube video from its link. It cannot read a TikTok. Add a TikTok URL as a source and NotebookLM treats it as a web page, which means it never hears a word the creator said.
The fix is to give NotebookLM the transcript as text. Below is why the link fails, the three routes that do work, how to structure a notebook of many TikToks, and what NotebookLM is actually good for once the words are in. One naming note first: Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026. It is the same product, and everything here applies under either name.
Why NotebookLM can't use a TikTok link
NotebookLM supports YouTube links as video sources and no other video site. Google's help page for adding sources lists "YouTube URLs of public videos" as the only video-link type, and only YouTube videos that have captions. TikTok is not on the list.
You can still paste a TikTok link as a web URL, but the same help page states what that does: only the text content of the HTML page is imported, and images and embedded videos are not. On a TikTok page that text is, at best, the caption, hashtags and username. The spoken words exist only in the audio, so they never reach your notebook.
That matters more in NotebookLM than in a chatbot. NotebookLM answers strictly from your sources and cites them. Give it a page with no speech and it will either have nothing to say or cite a caption as if it were the content.
Three routes that do work, compared
| Route | Works on any public TikTok? | Captures speech | Captures on-screen text | Free-plan cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Add the TikTok link as a web URL | Yes, but useless | No | No | Free |
| Upload the video file (MP4) | Only if you can download it | Yes | No | Free |
| Paste the transcript as Copied text | Yes | Yes | No | Two free transcripts a day |
Upload the file when you already have it. NotebookLM's audio import accepts MP4 among its listed file types and transcribes the speech at import, then saves the text as the source. That works well for your own TikToks, which you can save from the app. For anyone else's video it depends on the creator allowing downloads, and many do not.
Paste the transcript for everything else. It works on any public TikTok, needs no download, and gives you a source you can read and correct before NotebookLM uses it.
The workflow: transcript first, then NotebookLM
Step 1: Copy the TikTok link. Tap Share, then Copy link. The video has to be public; private and friends-only videos cannot be transcribed by any tool.
Step 2: Get the transcript. Paste the link into TranscribeTok and click Get Transcript. It transcribes the audio track itself, so it works whether or not the creator turned on TikTok's captions. Two transcripts a day are free, with no account.
Step 3: Add it as a Copied text source. In your notebook choose Add sources → Copied text, paste, and title the source clearly: @creator – topic – date is enough. NotebookLM lets you set the title when you create a pasted-text source, and good titles make its citations readable.
Step 4: One TikTok per source. You could paste ten transcripts into one source, but then every citation points to the same blob. One source per video means NotebookLM can tell you which TikTok a claim came from.
Step 5: Ask, or generate. Chat with the sources, or use the Studio panel to generate an Audio Overview, a mind map, flashcards, a quiz or a report.
What NotebookLM is good for with TikTok transcripts
NotebookLM earns its place when you have many videos, not one. For a single TikTok, a chatbot is faster; see our Gemini and ChatGPT guides. NotebookLM is a research tool, and it shines across a collection.
A niche research notebook
Add transcripts of 20 TikToks from one niche, then ask: "Which claims appear in more than three videos? Which videos contradict each other? Cite each one." Because NotebookLM answers only from your sources and shows citations, you can click through to the exact transcript behind each claim. That is much harder to get from a general chatbot.
A competitor hook library
Collect transcripts from a competitor's best-performing posts and ask NotebookLM to quote the first sentence of every video, then group the hooks by type. You get a swipe file grounded in the creator's exact words.
Study material from educational TikToks
Language, science and history creators make short lessons. Add a series of them and generate flashcards or a quiz. If the videos are in another language, see the TikTok transcript by language hub, including the Japanese and Portuguese guides.
An Audio Overview of a trend
Generate an Audio Overview across a set of TikToks on one topic and you get a podcast-style discussion of what the creators said, useful for catching up on a trend without watching every video.
Limits to know
- 50 sources per notebook on the free plan, each up to 500,000 words. A TikTok transcript is a few hundred words, so the source count, not the size, is what you will hit. Paid Google AI plans raise it.
- Transcripts are speech only. Text overlays, stickers and burned-in captions are rendered graphics, not data, and no transcript includes them. Ask NotebookLM about what a video showed and it has nothing to cite.
- TranscribeTok is one video at a time. Building a 50-source notebook takes 50 transcripts. At two free a day that is most of a month; a one-time pack ($9 for 100, credits never expire) makes it an afternoon. If you need hundreds of videos at once, a batch tool such as TokScript is the better fit.
- Fix garbled names before adding a source. NotebookLM reasons faithfully from what you give it, including a misheard brand name.
NotebookLM or a chatbot?
| You want to... | Use |
|---|---|
| Summarise or rewrite one TikTok | A chatbot: Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude |
| Compare claims across 10–50 TikToks with citations | NotebookLM |
| Turn a set of TikToks into flashcards, a quiz or an audio summary | NotebookLM |
| Keep a long-term, searchable archive of transcripts | Notion or a NotebookLM notebook per topic |

Frequently asked questions
Can NotebookLM use a TikTok link as a source? Not as a video. Google's help page lists YouTube URLs of public videos as the only supported video links. A TikTok link can only be added as an ordinary web URL, and for web URLs NotebookLM imports just the text content of the page, not embedded videos, so the spoken words are never imported. The reliable method is to add the TikTok's transcript as a Copied text source.
Is NotebookLM now called Gemini Notebook? Yes. Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026. Google describes it as the same standalone product with deeper links to the Gemini app and Google Search, so guides written for NotebookLM still apply.
Can I upload a TikTok video file to NotebookLM? Yes, if you have the file. NotebookLM's audio import accepts MP4 among its supported file types and transcribes the speech when the file is imported. You need the downloaded video first, which is only possible for your own TikToks or videos where the creator allowed downloads, and files without speech are not supported.
How many TikToks can I add to one NotebookLM notebook? On the free plan, up to 50 sources per notebook, and each source can hold up to 500,000 words. Adding one TikTok transcript per source therefore allows 50 videos per free notebook, with citations that point to the specific video. Paid Google AI plans raise the source limit.
Is it free to use TikTok transcripts in NotebookLM? Yes. NotebookLM's free plan accepts pasted text sources, and TranscribeTok gives two free TikTok transcripts every day with no account. Building a large notebook faster than two videos a day requires a one-time TranscribeTok credit pack, from $9 for 100 transcripts.
Give NotebookLM the words, not the link
NotebookLM is built to reason over text with citations. TikTok keeps its words in the audio. One step bridges the two.
