Perplexity is a search engine that answers with citations. It cannot hear a TikTok. Paste a TikTok link into Perplexity and it has no access to what the creator said, only to whatever text sits around the video on the web.

That matters more for Perplexity than for any other assistant, because the best reason to bring a TikTok to Perplexity is to check whether what it says is true. Below is the free workflow, when uploading the video file works instead, and the prompts that turn Perplexity into a TikTok fact-checker.

Why Perplexity can't use a TikTok link

Perplexity transcribes speech from files you upload, not from links you paste. Its help centre describes automatic transcription for uploaded audio and video files. It documents no equivalent for TikTok URLs.

The spoken words in a TikTok exist only in the audio track. The page around it carries a caption, hashtags and a username. So a link gives Perplexity, at best, that surrounding text plus whatever other sites have written about the video. It never gives it the claims the creator actually made.

The fix is to hand Perplexity the transcript.

The free workflow: transcript first, then Perplexity

Step 1: Copy the TikTok link. Tap Share, then Copy link. The video has to be public; private and friends-only videos cannot be transcribed by any tool.

Step 2: Get the transcript. Paste the link into TranscribeTok and click Get Transcript. It transcribes the audio itself, so it works even when the creator never turned on TikTok's captions. Two transcripts a day are free, with no account.

Step 3: Copy the plain text. Copy it in one tap with timestamps turned off. Timestamps add noise unless you want Perplexity to point at a moment in the video.

Step 4: Paste it into Perplexity with a clear instruction. Say what the video is and what you want checked (prompts below).

Step 5: Open the citations. Perplexity's value is that every answer links to its sources. Read them. A citation is a lead, not a verdict.

When uploading the video to Perplexity works instead

Upload the file when you already have it. Perplexity accepts video attachments, transcribes the speech automatically and can label who said what. Its help centre lists the limits:

  • Formats: MP4, MOV, MPEG, AVI, FLV, WebM, WMV and 3GPP, plus common audio formats
  • Size: 40 MB per file, for every file type
  • Allowance: uploads are limited on Free, Pro and Max plans, on a rolling weekly window, and your remaining allowance is not shown anywhere
  • Not indexed: what appears on screen. Perplexity transcribes the audio and ignores the visuals

That route works well for your own TikToks, which you can save from the app. For anyone else's video you first need a downloadable file, which depends on the creator allowing downloads. A transcript works on any public TikTok and does not use up your upload allowance.

Every route compared

Route Works on any public TikTok? Gets the spoken words Gets on-screen text Free-plan cost
Paste the TikTok link Yes, but no audio No No Free
Upload the video file Only if you can download it Yes, with speaker labels No Counts toward weekly upload allowance
Paste the transcript Yes Yes No Two free transcripts a day

Perplexity prompts that work on TikTok transcripts

Perplexity searches the web for every question, which makes it the right assistant for checking claims and the wrong one for creative rewriting.

Fact-check every claim

Below is the transcript of a TikTok about [topic]. List every factual claim it makes as a numbered list. For each one, search for current evidence and tell me whether it is supported, disputed or false, with sources. Quote the creator's exact words for each claim.

Check one statistic

A TikTok says: "[paste the sentence]". Find the original source of this number. Is it quoted accurately and in context? Give me the primary source if one exists.

Find what the TikTok left out

This TikTok transcript argues [position]. What are the strongest counter-arguments or caveats from credible sources that the video does not mention?

Get context on a trend

Here is a TikTok transcript about a new trend. What is the origin of this trend, how widely has it been reported, and has anything about it been corrected or debunked?

Perplexity is strongest on health, finance, product and news claims, where sources exist to check against. It is least useful on opinion and comedy, where there is nothing to verify.

Getting better answers

Fix misheard names first. If a product, person or drug name came through wrong in the transcript, correct it before pasting. Perplexity will otherwise search for the wrong thing and report, correctly, that it found nothing.

Ask for quotes. Telling Perplexity to quote the creator's exact words for each claim stops it paraphrasing a claim into something easier to check.

Do not ask about visuals. A transcript is audio only. Questions about what the video showed will get guesses.

Non-English TikToks: Perplexity handles transcripts in most major languages, and you can ask for the fact-check in English. For language-specific transcript quirks, see the TikTok transcript by language hub, including the Spanish and Portuguese guides.

Frequently asked questions

Can Perplexity watch a TikTok video from a link? No. Perplexity's help centre documents speech transcription for audio and video files you upload, not for video links. A pasted TikTok URL gives Perplexity the text around the video at most, never the spoken words, so the reliable method is to paste the TikTok's transcript into Perplexity as text.

Can I upload a TikTok video file to Perplexity? Yes, if you have the file. Perplexity accepts video uploads including MP4, MOV and WebM up to 40 MB per file, transcribes the speech automatically and can label speakers. It does not index what is shown on screen. Uploads count toward a weekly allowance on Free, Pro and Max plans.

How do I fact-check a TikTok with Perplexity? Get the TikTok's transcript, paste it into Perplexity and ask it to list every factual claim and check each one against current sources with citations. Perplexity searches the web for each claim, so you can open the sources and judge them yourself rather than relying on the creator's word.

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT for TikTok transcripts? For fact-checking, yes, because Perplexity searches the web and cites a source for each answer by default. For rewriting, summarising or turning a TikTok into a script, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini work equally well. The input is the same in every case: the TikTok's transcript as text.

Is it free to use TikTok transcripts in Perplexity? Yes. Perplexity's free plan accepts pasted text, and TranscribeTok gives two free TikTok transcripts every day with no account. Occasional fact-checking costs nothing at all.

Check what TikTok says, not what it shows

Perplexity is built to check claims against sources. TikTok keeps its claims in the audio. One step connects them.
