Gemini can summarize a YouTube video from its link. It cannot do the same for a TikTok. Paste a TikTok URL into Gemini and it has no access to what was said, so it either declines or guesses from whatever text sits around the video.

The fix is the same one that works for every AI assistant: give Gemini the transcript instead of the link. Below is the free workflow, why the link fails, when uploading the video file is the better route, and the prompts that get the most out of Gemini specifically.

Why Gemini can't open a TikTok link

Gemini's video-link feature is built for YouTube, not TikTok. Google's documentation for the Gemini API says you can pass YouTube URLs directly, and only public YouTube videos. There is no equivalent documented support for TikTok links, in the API or in the Gemini app.

TikTok is also a hard page to read from the outside. The spoken words exist only in the audio track. The page itself carries a caption, hashtags and a username, which is exactly the material a model will pattern-match from if it tries to answer anyway. That is how you get a confident summary of a video it never heard.

A transcript removes the guesswork: Gemini works from exactly what was said.

The free workflow: transcript first, then Gemini

Step 1: Copy the TikTok link. Tap Share, then Copy link. The video has to be public; private and friends-only videos cannot be transcribed by any tool.

Step 2: Get the transcript. Paste the link into TranscribeTok and click Get Transcript. It transcribes the audio track itself, so it works whether or not the creator turned on TikTok's captions. Two transcripts a day are free, with no account.

Step 3: Copy the plain text. Skip the timestamped version unless you want Gemini to point at specific moments. Timestamps add noise to a summary.

Step 4: Paste it into Gemini with a specific instruction. Tell Gemini what the video is ("a 50-second TikTok from a personal finance creator aimed at students") and exactly what you want back.

Step 5: Keep asking. The transcript stays in the conversation, so you can ask for a summary, then the hook, then a rewrite, without pasting again.

When uploading the video to Gemini is better

Upload the file when what is shown on screen matters. The Gemini app accepts video uploads, which a transcript cannot replace for visual questions. Google's help centre sets the limits:

  • Up to 2 GB per video
  • Total video length up to 5 minutes on the free plan
  • Up to 1 hour total with Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra
  • Up to 10 files in one prompt

Most TikToks fit comfortably. The catch is getting the file: you need the MP4 on your device, and many creators disable downloads. For your own TikToks this is easy; for anyone else's, the transcript route is usually the only one available.

The practical rule: transcript for what was said, video upload for what was shown. For summaries, quotes, rewrites and translations, the transcript is faster and more accurate, because Gemini is reading the words rather than listening to compressed audio.

Gemini prompts that work on TikTok transcripts

Gemini responds well to structure. Tell it the format you want, and it will usually hold to it.

A summary that keeps the specifics

Here is the transcript of a TikTok about [topic]. Summarize it in 5 bullet points. Keep every number, product name and instruction exactly as stated. Then give me one sentence on who this video is for.

Break down the hook

This is a TikTok transcript. Quote the first two sentences exactly, then explain what technique the hook uses (question, bold claim, pattern interrupt, story) and write three alternative hooks for the same video.

Turn it into a Google Doc outline

Turn this TikTok transcript into a blog post outline with an H1, four H2 sections and two bullet points under each. Only use points the speaker actually makes.

Gemini's output can be exported straight to Google Docs from the response menu, which makes this a quick route from a TikTok to a draft.

Compare several TikToks

Below are transcripts of four TikToks, labelled 1 to 4. Make a table with columns: video, main claim, hook type, call to action. Then tell me which two videos make contradicting claims.

Label each transcript clearly. Gemini handles long inputs well, so several transcripts in one message is where it pulls ahead of doing each video separately.

Getting better answers from Gemini

Fix garbled names before you paste. If a brand or person came through wrong in the transcript, correct it first. Gemini will otherwise reason faithfully about the wrong word.

Don't ask about visuals from a transcript. The transcript is audio only. Ask Gemini what the video showed and it will invent something.

Say what language you want back. If the TikTok is in Spanish and you want an English summary, say so. Gemini translates well, but it defaults to answering in the language of the input. For language-specific quirks, see the TikTok transcript by language hub, including the Spanish and Indonesian guides.

The transcript-first workflow is identical in every assistant. The differences are in what else each one can do with a TikTok:

Frequently asked questions

Can Gemini watch a TikTok video from a link? No. Google documents direct video-link analysis for YouTube links only, and the Gemini API states that only public YouTube URLs can be passed in directly. A pasted TikTok link does not give Gemini the video's audio, so the reliable route is to get the TikTok transcript as text and paste that into Gemini.

Can I upload a TikTok video file to Gemini instead? Yes, if you have the file. The Gemini app accepts video uploads of up to 2 GB each, with a total video length of 5 minutes on the free plan and up to 1 hour on Google AI Pro or Ultra. Most TikToks are short enough to fit, but you need the video file first, and many TikToks cannot be downloaded if the creator disabled downloads.

Why use a transcript instead of uploading the video to Gemini? A transcript is faster, works on any public TikTok without downloading it, and does not count against Gemini's video upload limit. It also gives Gemini the exact words spoken, which is what matters for summaries, quotes and rewrites. Upload the video only when you need Gemini to describe what is shown on screen.

Is it free to summarize a TikTok with Gemini? Yes. Gemini's free tier handles pasted text, and TranscribeTok gives two free TikTok transcripts every day with no account. The whole workflow costs nothing for occasional use.

Does Gemini see the on-screen text in a TikTok? Not from a transcript. A transcript contains only the spoken audio, so text overlays, stickers and burned-in captions are not included. If the on-screen text matters, upload the video file to Gemini as well, within its video length limits.

Give Gemini the words, not the link

Gemini is excellent with text and cannot open TikTok. One step fixes that.
